Why Reading Physical Books Still Hits Different

There is something about a physical book. The weight, the smell, the sound of the spine cracking. E readers are convenient. But they are not the same.

Your brain processes physical and digital text differently. With a physical book, you know where you are in the story. The thickness of the pages on each side gives you a sense of progress. You remember where on the page you read something. That spatial memory helps you recall information.

Physical books do not distract you. No notifications, no battery anxiety, no temptation to check email. Just you and the text.

They also last. A book from fifty years ago is still readable. An e reader from five years ago is probably obsolete.

The downside is they take up space. And they are harder to carry. And they cost more.

But the experience is worth it. Some things should not be digital.
